Born in 1938 at Vadodara (Gujarat), Shashikant was
destined to climb greater heights in his life.
Initiated early into the musical world through
mother Late Smt Nalinee Tambe, the first few inducing
notes
of motherly music prompted young “Shashi” to
gain more interest in music. Further, he pursued the
skills, knowledge and delved deeper into it. As the
luck would favour him, he got advanced guidance from
Pt Krishnarao Mujumdar (Mamasaheb) - from Ustd Rajab
Ali khan lineage - which enabled him to hone the finer
nuances & enhancement of musical dexterity.
The time ahead won him a lot of laurels when he was
awarded with the vocal music Gold Medal through the
hands of then the first President of India – Dr
Rajendra Prasad.
A student of Holkar Science college-Indore with a Master
of Sciences, He is a Doctorate in Chemistry and has
been a professor of Chemistry and served as head of
the department until retirement.
Being an established “A” graded artist
for All India Radio (AIR) and TV (Doordarshan), he
has been regularly performing for more than 5 decades
and is an reputed name in the broadcasting world. He
has been invited to participate in prestigious Radio
Sangeet Sammelan (musical conferences) and has the
privilege of presenting multiple National Programmes
to his credit. As one would imagine, he is also actively
involved and nominated as a judge and subject matter
expert for auditions and competitions for All India
Radio.
He has been a successful performer in most of prestigious
music festivals / locations of India – Sawai
Gandharva, Tansen Samroha, NCPA Auditorium, Malwa Utsav,
Bharat Bhavan, Saptak and many more.
India International Society for Unity has conferred
him with “Ratna Shiromani Award”. There
are several other honours that he received – Mehfil
samman at Indore, Karkare felicitation from Gwalior,
All India Sanskar Bharati Samman from Luckhnow.
Has authored three significant books – Arohi,
Avarohi & Raag Parichay based on his own compositions
in numerous ragas. His references can be seen in many
publications related to music.
He has travelled abroad to Europe & Asia Pacific
and has performed in the UK and several other locations
outside India.
He has been guiding a whole lot of budding and mature
musicians. Also, he is a respected guide for Mphil
and PhD students. In addition to vocal music, he has
equally proficient hand on violin as well.
Popularly known as “Bhai” in the family,
Dr Shashikant Tambe resides in Indore with wife Smt
Jayashree and has two sons & two grandsons.
